Fleas
Fleas are a year-round concern in Victoria, with infestations more common during the warmer months. These parasites thrive in sandy or sheltered environments and are easily transported by stray animals and wildlife. In severe cases, especially in young or immunocompromised pets, flea infestations can lead to anaemia or life-threatening complications.
Maintaining consistent flea control, along with routine hot washes of your pet’s bedding, are essential steps in keeping them healthy and itch-free. Our clinic offers highly effective flea treatments, including options that suit both cats and dogs.

Ticks
Parasitic ticks pose a serious risk to pets in Australia, particularly in bushland and coastal areas. Even though Gippsland is not considered a high-risk tick area, pets that travel to or from endemic regions are still at risk. Tick paralysis is a medical emergency and can be fatal without prompt treatment.
We stock effective tick prevention options, including long-lasting oral and injectable treatments. Speak with our team about how to keep your dog protected year-round.
Heartworm
Heartworm is transmitted by mosquito bites and is one of the more dangerous parasites affecting dogs. Once inside the body, heartworm larvae travel to the heart and large blood vessels, potentially leading to severe and fatal cardiovascular issues.
Although heartworm is more common in northern Australia, cases have been detected in Victoria—including Gippsland—so prevention remains essential. If your pet has not been on consistent heartworm protection, a test is required before starting a new preventative to avoid life-threatening complications from a sudden kill-off of adult worms.
Protect your dog with a convenient annual heartworm injection, available at our clinic.
Intestinal Worms
Dogs and cats in Australia are commonly affected by a variety of intestinal worms, including roundworm, hookworm, whipworm, and tapeworm. These parasites can cause symptoms ranging from diarrhoea and weight loss to more serious health issues. Some intestinal worms are zoonotic, meaning they can be transmitted to humans, making regular worming even more important.
We recommend intestinal worming every three months for adult pets, and more frequently for puppies and kittens. Our team can advise you on the most appropriate schedule and products for your pet.
Mites and Lice
Mites and lice are external parasites that can cause intense itching, hair loss, and skin infections. Mites such as Sarcoptes (responsible for mange) or Demodex often require veterinary diagnosis and treatment. Lice, though less common, can spread easily between animals and cause considerable discomfort.
If you notice excessive scratching, patchy fur, or scaly skin, book a skin check at our clinic. We offer treatments that effectively and safely target mites and lice for both dogs and cats.
